Cordoba: couchsurfing, asado and partying

살타에서의 다이내믹한 로드 여행 이후 벼룩의 공격에 지친 나의 몸을 이끌고  2010년 12월 3일 드디어 젊음의 도시 코르도바에 도착했다.
After the dynamic road trip in Salta, exhausted by the numerous bed bug attacks, I arrived at Cordoba on December 3rd, 2010.

페루에서부터 여행하면서 아르헨티나의 도시 중 부에노스아이레스를 제외하고 가장 많이 들어 본 곳이 바로 코르도바였다.  선남선녀 많기로 소문난 아르헨티나 중에서도 미녀들이 가장 많은 도시. 대학인구가 많아 젊은이들로 붐빈다는 활기찬 도시. 그래서 밤이 잠들지 않는다는 도시. 코르도바에서 보냈던 6일은 6개월의 여행을 통틀어 가장 열심히 놀았던 때가 아니었나 싶다.
On the way from Peru, I've heard of most things about Cordoba, except for Buenos Aires among Argentine cities. Where there are the most beautiful girls of Argentina. A lively city with huge university crowd. A city which never sleeps. The 6 days that I spent in Cordoba might have been the period when I went out most intensely during my 6-month trip.

몇 개월 전 코르도바에 들렀던 알렉스 덕분에 알렉스가 안면이 있었던 Couchsurfing 회원인 Tana의 집에서 머물게 되었다. Couchsurfing은 배낭여행자들의 온라인 커뮤니티로 자기 동네에 여행오는 사람들을 재워줌으로써 여행경비를 절감하고 문화적 교류를 도모한다는 컨셉을 갖고 있다(www.couchsurfing.org). 내가 가장 좋아하는 점은 Couchsurfing을 통해 현지인들을 만날 수 있고 이들과의 교류를 통해 '관광'의 차원을 넘어선 '여행'을 할 수 있다는 것이다.
Thanks to Alex, who had already been to Cordoba several months before, We could stay at Tana, a Couchsurfing member Alex had gotten to know during his previous visit. Couchsurfing(www.couchsurfing.org) is an online community of backpackers with a basic concept of hosting travelers, thus saving money and promoting cultural exchanges. I like Couchsurfing because through the community, I can get to know locals and by hanging out with them, I can manage to 'travel', not being a tourist, who merely visits touristic attractions.

코르도바에서는 운이 좋았다. 때마침 대학교 학기가 막 끝난 참이라 Couchsurfing을 통해 만난 아르헨티나 친구들도 시간적 여유와 놀고 싶은 욕구가 있었고, 여행중이던 Adam과 Paul(후에 부에노스아이레스에서 다시 만났던 친구들)도 우리와 코르도바에서의 일정이 비슷해 함께 6일에 걸쳐 여러차례 어울릴 수 있었다.
We were lucky in Cordoba. As it was when the fall semester just ended, Argentine friends from Couchsurfing had time to hang out with us and were more than willing to have fun. Adam and Paul, travelers from Hungary and France, respectively, had similar plans in Cordoba so we could get along several times during our stay there. 


한번은 Adam과 Paul의 호스트였던 Belen이 아사도(Asado:아르헨티나식 숯불구이)를 준비해 우리들을 초대했다. 약속시간은 9시. 10시가 넘어서야 사람이 다 모였다. 열 명이 넘는 인원이 Belen 집의 테라스에 모여 앉아 고기가 익을 때까지 와인과 애피타이저를 곁들인 수다로 시간을 보냈다. 11시가 훌쩍 넘어 저녁을 먹기 시작했다. (아르헨티나에서는 11시 전후로 저녁을 먹는다.) 숯 향이 나는 꽤 여러부위의 소고기와 양고기를 배불리 먹었다. 식사가 거의 마무리되자 이번엔 스피커 볼륨을 높였다. 쿠바리듬을, 살사를, 아르헨티나 탱고를, 남미 민속음악을 들으며 웃고 떠들고 춤을 추고... 한껏 흥이 난 우리는 새벽 두시가 넘어 시내로 나가서 동이 틀 때까지 밤을 즐겼다.(참고로 이 날은 월요일이었다.) 아르헨티나에서 가장 기억에 남는 밤 중 하나일 것이다.
Once, Belen, the host of Adam and Paul, invited us to Asado(the Argentine-style bbq) at her house. People started to arrive at her place around 10 o'clock. More than ten people sat around at the terrace and had interesting conversations over some wine and appetizers, waiting for the meat ready. It was later than 11pm when we began to eat dinner.  (In Argentina, people eat dinner around 11pm.) We had more than enough beef and lamb. When the dinner was almost done, we turned up the volume of the music. Listening to Cuban rhythms, Salsa, Argentine Tango, folkloric music, we laughed, chatted and danced. As quite in the mood of going out, we left her house around 2am and stayed out dancing all night till the dawn. (By the way, it was Monday.) It was one of those nights when I had the most fun in Argentina.

코르도바에서는 낮과 밤이 뒤바뀐 생활을 한데다가 딱히 구경할 만할 곳이 많은 것도 아니라 늦은 오후면 두어 시간씩 산책 겸 이곳 저곳을 걸어다녀 본 것이 관광의 전부였다. 코르도바를 떠올리면 그곳을 '여행했다'기 보다 그곳에서 '살았다'는 느낌이 든다.
As I was asleep during the day and was awake throughout the night and there were not many things to see, walking around the city for a couple of hours in the evenings was all the tourism I did there. When I think of Cordoba, I feel like I 'lived' there, rather than 'traveled.'
