El Calafate: Stepping on the Patagonian land

At the beginning of my trip, I was not that willing to travel farther down to Patagonia. Despite the intact and mysterious image of Patagonia, it was because there are tons of tourists, the prices are highest in Argentina and it is not an easy way to get there- from Buenos Aires, it takes 4 hours by flight and  more than 30 hours by bus.
However, backpackers I met on the road admired Patagonia, the steamy weather in Buenos Aires brought me the longing for chilly weather and the special airfare I occasionally found on the Net led me to impulsive buying.
Starting January 16th, I traveled around Patagonia for about a month.

El Calafate is one of the most famous towns in Argentine Patagonia.

Buenos Aires
4-hour flight from Buenos Aires brought me to the totally different world. El Calafate was a small and peaceful town devoid of high buildings. Unspoiled nature and even somewhat bleak scenary gave me the feeling of 'the tip of the continent.'

El Calafate is famous for its nearby Glacier Perito Moreno. Standing in front of this enormous glacier, I just knew why it became that famous.

I couldn't belive that what I saw was real. It was so white that my camera lens couldn't handle.

There are three different ways of enjoying the glacier. First, take a boat and have a close look of the glacier. Second, have a overall look of the glacier from the viewpoint. Third, walk on the glacier itself through a trekking package offered by travel agenices. As it cost more than $100 for a few hours, I didn't even think about doing it. I was impressed enough by having a look from a boat and from the viewpoint.

whom I helped out when he was robbed and I traveled along Patagonia with.
Later on we figured out we are neighbors in Seoul!

Although it costs you quite a bit, it surely will be once-in-a-lifetime experience.

There are several attractions around El Calafate. Yet, I was going to do some hikes when I reached El Chalten, I didn't do anything else but take a rest, enjoying the relaxing atmosphere of the tip of the continent.
