Salta, the most adventurous trip of all

2010년 11월 28일, 나는 드디어 아르헨티나 땅을 밟았다. 칠레의 산 뻬드로 데 아따까마(San Pedro de Atacama)에서 10시간짜리 주간버스를 타고 아르헨티나 살타(Salta)에 도착했다. 버스가 살타의 터미널에 들어서면서 옆 자리에 앉았던 칠레 아주머니가 마중나올 사람이 있냐고 물었다. '아니요'라고 대답하던 차, 창 밖으로 낯익은 얼굴이 보였다. 페루 쿠스코에서 함께 트레킹을 했던 알렉스(Alex)가 터미널에 마중나와 있었던 것. 살타에서 만나기 위해 연락을 주고받았었지만 터미널까지 올 줄은 몰랐었기에 더욱 반가웠다.
November 28, 2010, I finally stepped on the land of Argentina. I took a 10-hour bus from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile to Salta, Argentina. As the bus was entering the terminal, an old woman sitting next to me asked if there was somebody waiting for me at the terminal. When I was about to say no, I could spot a familiar face. It was Alex, with whom I did an impressive trekking in Peru, waiting for me. Although we exchanged emails to meet up in Salta, I didn't expect him to show up at the terminal so it felt really good to have him there.

살타는 화려하지는 않지만 소박하고 편안한 중간규모의 도시였다. 페루와 볼리비아의 고산지대에서 두달을 넘게 지냈던 이후였던지라, 북적북적하지 않은 도심과 널찍한 거리,유럽풍에 가까운 건축물이 인상적이었다. 애초 계획은 살타에서 일주일 정도 머물면서 여유를 부리는 것이었는데, 알렉스는 이미 살타에서 며칠을 지냈던 데다가 도시 자체에 볼 거리가 많은 것도 아니라 이틀 만에 살타를 떠나 알렉스와 함께 여행하기로 결정했다.
Salta, the capital of the province of Salta, is a peaceful and pleasant city. As it was right after spending over two months in Peru and Bolivia, uncrowded center, spacious streets and European-style architecture were impressive. I had planned to stay about a week in Salta, having some rest, but as Alex had already stayed several days in Salta and there was nothing much to do, I decided to leave Salta two days later and accompany alex.

살타(A) 주변에 갈 만한 곳은 카치(B)와 카파야테(F) 였는데 관광안내소에 물어보니 카치(Cachi)와 카파야테(Cafayate) 사이에는 대중교통이 없기 때문에 두 곳 모두를 가려면 Cachi를 갔다가 살타로 돌아온 후에 68번 국도를 타고 Cafayate로 다시 가야한단다. 고심하던 우리는 결국 Cachi와 Cafayate 사이의 40번 국도에서 히치하이킹을 시도해보기로 하고 짐을 꾸려 Cachi행 버스에 올랐다. 참고로 아르헨티나의 40번 국도(Ruta 40)은 험난한 지형때문에 비포장도로가 많고 교통량이 없기로 유명하다.

We were thinking about visiting Cachi(B) and Cafayate(F) in the province, but the tourist office said that there wasn't public transportation between the two so we would have to come back to Salta and take Ruta 68 in order to visit Cafayate. Yet, we decided to try hitchhiking on Ruta 40 between Cachi and Cafayate and left for Cachi. Ruta 40 is famous for rough landscape, bad road conditions and little traffic.

살타에서 4시간이 걸려 도착한 Cachi는 울긋불긋한 산자락들로 둘러싸여있는 작은 마을이었다. 온통 하얀색으로 칠해져있는 건물들이 강렬한 햇빛과 어우러져 사막도시의 느낌을 주었다.
Cachi, where we arrived after 4 hours, was a small town surrounded by rough and dry mountains. White buildings along with strong sunshine gave an impression of a town in the middle of dessert.

Cachi를 돌아보니 오후 2~3시. 히치하이킹을 위해 무작정 대로변으로 나가는 것 보다 자가용을 갖고 있는 관광객처럼 보이는 사람들에게 미리 얘기를 해보는 게 낫겠다는 알렉스의 의견에 마을의 광장 주변을 돌아다니며 혹시 Cafayate(F)로 가는 사람이 있는지 알아봤다. 다행히도 그 중간지점인 Molinos(C)까지 갈 예정이라는 캐나다인 커플이 우리를 데려다주겠노라고 했다.
It was about 2pm after finishing walking around Cachi. As Alex said that it would be better to ask people around if anybody can give us a ride to Cafayate than directly head to the main road, we walked around the main plaza and asked people. Fortunately, there was a Canadian couple heading to Molinos(C), which was located in the middle of Cachi(B) and Cafayate(F), they gave us a ride.

아르헨티나만 한달 남짓 여행중이라는 캐나다인 부부는 차를 렌트해서 살타(Salta), 후후이(Jujuy)를 비롯한 북부지역을 다니고 있었다. 이들은 Molinos에서 하룻 밤을 머물 계획이라 Molinos마을로 들어가는 길목에서 우리를 내려주었고 우리는 또다시 Cafayate까지의 히치하이킹을 시도했다.
The Canadian couple was traveling around Argentina for a month and rented a car to travel in the north of Argentina such as Salta and Jujuy. They dropped us in front of Molinos as they were going to stay overnight there so we tried hitchhiking again to Cafayate. 

2시간 동안 지나간 차도 몇 대 없었을 뿐더러 대부분 만차였다. 자리가 있었던 두 대의 차는 우리에게 눈길도 주지않고 지나가버려 절망하던 차, 마을에서 캐나다인 부부의 차가 돌아 나오고 있었다. 별다른 게 없다고 생각해서 길을 계속 가기로 결정했던 것. 우리는 고마워하며 차에 올라탔고 한 시간 남짓한 운전 끝에 Angastaco(D)라는 마을에 도착했다. 히치하이킹을 더 시도해보기로 하고 해질녘까지 기다리던 우리는 차가 한 대도 지나지 않는 상황이 되자 Angastaco(D)에서 잠을 자기로 결정했다. Angastaco는 아마 내가 이번 여행 중에 머물렀던 곳들 중에서 관광과는 가장 거리가 먼 마을 이었을 것이다. 마을 내에 레스토랑이라곤 1곳 뿐이었고 이방인은 우리들 뿐이었다. 특히 우리가 교회 앞에서 호스텔 주인이 예배를 마치고 나오기를 기다리는 동안 사람들은 나를 동물원 원숭이 보는 마냥 신기하게 쳐다봤다.
Only a few cars passed for 2 hours and most of them were full. There were a couple of cars with seats free but they didn't even pay attention to us. However, the Canadian couple was coming back from the town to save our lives as they finally didn't feel like staying there. After an hour driving, we arrived at Angastaco(D) and wanted to try hitchhiking until the dawn but as we couldn't get a ride we ended up staying there, where was the least touristic place I ever stayed during this trip. There was only one restaurant in the town and we were the only tourists there. When we were waiting for the owner of the hostel to come out of the church, people stared at me as if they were watching some exotic animals in the zoo. 

우리는 결국 마을에서 하나뿐인 호스텔에서 캐나다커플과 다시 마주치게 되었다. 그리고 다음날 오전에 Cafayate로 함께 떠나기로 약속을 하고서는, 편안한 마음으로 잠들었다. 하지만 그 다음날 아침 눈을 떴을 때는 그들은 이미 떠난 상태였다. 할 수 없이 우리는 마을 앞 주유소에서 수소문해 Cafayate(F)와 가까운 San Carlos(E)로 가는 픽업트럭을 얻어타게 되었다. 물론 운전석이 아닌 트럭 뒷편에.
We eventually met up with the Canadian couple again at the only hostel in the town. After arranging to meet up with them in the following morning and travel together to Cafayate, we fell asleep without any concern. However, when we woke up in the morning they had already left. So we asked people around at the gas station of the town and a pick-up gave us a ride to San Carlos(E), which was only about 10km away from Cafayate(F).

San Carlos에서는 Cafayate로 가는 미니 합승차가 있어서 이틀 간의 여정 끝에 우리는 드디어 Cafayate에 도착할 수 있었다. 기념으로 아르헨티나식 돈까스인 양손바닥만한 Milanesa를
배불리 먹고 광장주변을 거닐던 중 캐나다인 커플과 다시마주쳤다. 어찌된 일이냐 물었더니 밤새 벼룩이 심하게 물어대서 더이상 잠을 잘 수가 없어 날이 밝자마자 길을 떠났다는 것. 이유가 어떻든 약속을 저버린 것에 우리기분은 썩 좋진 않았지만 무튼 Cafayate까지 비교적 쉽게 도착했으니 다행이었다. 혼자 였으면 엄두도 못냈을 히치하이킹. 알렉스 덕분에 보다 다이내믹한 여행을 할 수 있어서 정말 좋았다. 내 생애 첫번째 히치하이킹.
As there were combis running from San Carlos to Cafayate, we could finally reach Cafayate after one-full day trip. We celebrated it with a big milanesa, walked around the town and bumped into the Canadian couple again. We asked them how come they had already left and they said that as they couldn't sleep because of fleas on the bed, they hit the road when the sun came out. It was not very nice of them to leave us behind but it was fine anyway since we made it to Cafayate. I might have dared not to hitchhike if I had been alone. Thanks to Alex, I could experience more adventures.
