남미, 혹은 라틴아메리카를 여행하려면 스페인어는 필수일까?

Is Spanish necessary to travel around South America?

여기에 대한 대답은 본인이 생각하는 '여행'이 무엇인지에 따라 달라질 것 같다. 

여행이 '보는 것'이 중심이라면 스페인어를 하지 않아도 된다. 

약간의 불편함은 따르겠지만 스페인어를 못한다고 해서 

돌아다니는 것, 보는 것이 불가능한 것은 아니니까. 

주요관광지에는 영어 안내문이 붙어있고, 

호스텔에는 적어도 영어를 조금은 할 줄 아는 스태프들이 있으며, 

뭐가 뭔지는 몰라도 온갖 몸짓을 동원해서 음식을 시킬 수는 있으니까. 

The answer depends on what you think 'travel' is.
If travel means to see things, you don't necessarily speak Spanish.
It would be somewhat inconvenient, but you can still move around and see things.
Most touristic spots have explanations in English,
in hostels there are staff who speak at least a bit of English,
you can still order food even if you have no idea what it is.

하지만 당신이 추구하는 여행이 '보는 것'보다는 '경험하는 것'이라면,

그래서 현지문화를 몸소 느끼고 싶고 현지인들과 어울려보고 싶다면,

당신과 마찬가지로 이방인인 사람들과 함께 갇혀있는 '호스텔'밖의 세상을 체험해보고 싶다면,

스페인어는 필수다. 

However, if you think travel is to experience, rather than to see,
thus, willing to experience cultures and hang out with locals 
and step outside the hostels full of foreigners,
Spanish is a must.

나는 라틴아메리카를 여행하기 위해 스페인어를 처음 배우기 시작했고 

스페인어를 할 줄 알았기 때문에 이번에 남미를 여행하기로 결심했었다. 

그리고 스페인어를 안다는 것은 이번 여행에서 큰 축복이었다.
I started to learn Spanish in order to travel around Latin America 
and since I can speak Spanish, I decided to travel around South America.
Knowing Spanish was a blessing to this trip.

스페인어를 못했더라면,
버스 옆자리에 앉은 어린 여자아이와의 대화,
버스회사 직원과의 수다,
관광지에서든 길거리에서든 ,
나에게 말을 걸어오는 사람들과 함께했던 잠깐이지만 즐거웠던 순간들,
이런 건 불가능했을 테지.
Had I not spoken Spanish.
I wouldn't have had conversations with this little girl who sat next to me in a bus, to the guys who worked for bus companies, to those people who came to talk to me.


그리고 '친한 친구'라고 감히 말할 수 있는
푸에르토 리코의 다비드,










스페인의 알렉스,










우루과이의 마르틴과도
이렇게 친해질 수는 없었을 테고.



I wouldn't have been that good friends with David from Puerto Rico, Alex from Spain and Martin from Uruguay.



부에노스아이레스에서도 탱고를 사랑하는 이들과 어울리며 좋은 추억을 만들 수 없었겠지.
I wouldn't have shared that good time with the people from El Amague, the tango class that I went to in Buenos Aires.

그리고
이들이 없는 나의 남미 여행은 앙꼬없는 찐빵이니,
스페인어가 부재한 나의 남미 여행은 상상할 수가 없다.
My trip to South America without them is unimaginable.
And so it is without speaking Spanish.
